The former cow byre and barn area on the ground floor is now the family’s open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. The former barn door has been glazed and converted into an enormous window. All the window and door openings have been retained with their original dimensions to maintain the authentic, historical Low German feel. As is typical in northern Germany, wooden outward-opening windows adorn the gables.
The rooms themselves, finished in a small number of natural materials, are restrained but inviting. Elements such as the steel staircase contrast with the predominantly light tones used for the floors, walls and furniture.
